When you first start to make eco-friendly swaps around the home, it can often feel a bit daunting and overwhelming which is why I always suggest tackling one room at a time. I have previously shown you how to make some really amazing switches in the bathroom but another room that also uses a lot of plastic is the kitchen. Now your first thought probably goes to food packaging but this is more of a tricky area to cover due to the lack of options, so let’s firstly look at washing up products because this is an easy step thanks to brands like Seep.

About Seep

Seep was founded in 2020 by Laura because she had struggled herself to find eco-cleaning tools that would replace her plastic sponges etc. She saw a gap in the market and set out on her mission to ditch plastic waste from our cleaning routines, reduce microplastics from entering our waterways, provide a safer option for all the family and prevent more unnecessary waste from going to landfill. Starting with a simple eco-friendly, biodegradable/compostable sponge, the brand grew and grew and even appeared on Dragon’s Den, where 2 of the Dragons chose to invest. Seep now offers a wide range of fantastic plastic-free products including wooden brushes, bamboo cloths, eco rubber gloves, copper scourers, eco sponges, bio-degradable bin liners and more. The entire range at Seep is designed to be effective, long-lasting, easy to use and all have eco-friendly ways of disposing. This is a sustainable brand that I have used for years and highly recommend, so let’s take a closer look at some of their key products.

Eco Sponge

Seep’s eco sponge is made entirely from wood pulp cellulose and loofah making them 100% plastic-free and compostable at the end of their life. This is a far cry from your regular sponges (the coloured ones you get in the supermarket). Those are made from plastic and will shed microplastics into the waterways and leave them behind on your plates, cups and bowls etc., meaning they are bad for both the planet and your health. I’ve always found them not to work very well anyway, and they tend to rip quite quickly and only last for a short while. Seep’s sponges usually last us over a month, and even then, we can wash them in the washing machine or dishwasher in order to prolong their usage. The loofah side is ideal for scrubbing at those really dirty items and the softer cellulose is perfect for delicate things such as wine glasses. They work, they are sustainable, they look good, they feel good, they save you money in the long run and they are plastic-free making them a fab swap for anybody new to eco-living.

You can purchase this Seep product in a pack of four here or a 1 year supply (12 sponges) here. If you spend over £10 you can get 15% off with my code EMMAREED_WRITES or by clicking any of the links to the Seep website that I include in this article.

Eco Rubber Gloves

Many rubber gloves we purchase for washing up are made from a synthetic rubber as this is easier and cheaper to mass produce. This means that they cannot be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way and at the end of their life will go to landfill/incineration. Seep’s eco rubber gloves are made with FSC certified natural rubber and are cotton lined making them biodegradable and sustainable. On top of this, they are available in 3 sizes, come in a gorgeous shade of green and have palm and finger tip grip to help with the washing up process. We found these to be really comfortable and they last ages.

You can purchase a set of 3 from their website here (spend over £10 to benefit from my 15% discount).

Copper Scourers

When your eco sponge isn’t quite rough enough for those really stubborn washing up jobs, a Seep copper scourer is your next must-have for your kitchen. Made entirely from copper which is naturally anti-bacterial and 100% recyclable, this tough product will have your kitchen items clean in no time.

You can purchase these as a pack of 6, and again, my discount code will be applied when you spend over £10.

Eco Sponge Cloths

When it comes to wiping down kitchen surfaces and cupboards or mopping up spills many people still reach for kitchen roll for these jobs but this product usually comes wrapped in plastic, it is often made from virgin wood (recycled paper is a better option) and it is single-use which creates a lot of waste each week and costs you money time and time again. By investing in a good quality cloth that can be washed and reused, you won’t ever be without and be saving your pennies in the long run. Seep’s eco sponge cloths are a great alternative. They are made entirely from wood pulp cellulose and repurposed cotton, they are so absorbent that they can soak up 15 times their own weight and are machine washable. Once they have had their day, you can home compost them. I love how soft these feel and how they glide effortlessly over worktops to leave them clean.

You can purchase these cloths in a 2 pack here or just one on its own here and in a 4 pack here (don’t forget to add more items to get 15% off!)
