5 Eco Must-Haves for Your Bathroom

When it comes to making eco-friendly swaps around the home, I always suggest choosing one room to begin with and building on that slowly. That way, you can take your time with your changes, learn what products are available, try out a variety to see what sticks and what you love. One of the best rooms to start with is the bathroom because this is often where you’ll find the most single-use plastic and with so many reusable/sustainable/natural options now out there, you can have a lot of fun making swaps that’ll save you money, be better for your health and for the environment. Here are my 5 eco must-haves…

Shampoo and Conditioner Bars

Shampoo and conditioner bottles are always made out of plastic, and here in the UK, we throw away around 520 million bottles every single year!! That is staggering, isn’t it? Some of these may well be recycled (if your kerbside collection offers it for this type of plastic) but even then, they will eventually degrade and no longer be viable, so will end up in landfill/incineration. The best way to reduce this plastic waste is by making the switch to solid bars of shampoo and conditioner. You can now find these in a lot of high street shops (Boots, Lush etc), eco stores, online eco shops, making it far easier to see what is available and what will suit your hair type. They do vary in quality and price so I would do your research before purchasing or go into store to gain advice (Lush are great for this). One thing I have noticed about our bars is that they last a really long time making them cheaper in the long term. I have more information on these over on my other website Emma Reed here.

Flannels

Wipes have had their day. They cost you so much over the years, they come in single use plastic, some contain plastic, many contain perfumes and they are damaging to the environment (especially if you flush them!) Instead, switch those single-use wipes for a reusable one and by this I mean a flannel. Flannels have been around for donkey’s years and they do a great job of cleaning, exfoliating and lasting. Be sure to choose one made from natural materials such as cotton or bamboo and not those made from manmade fibres.

Natural Loofah

Many of the exfoliators and scrubbers that are sold cheaply in the beauty stores are, in fact, just plastic. Not only does this mean you are running the risk of leaving microplastics on your skin but you are also washing them down the drain, into the waterways. To avoid these issues, make the swap to a natural loofah. Loofahs are a plant that you can either grow yourself or purchase online via eco shops or stores such as Etsy. A loofah should last you a long time, they are excellent exfoliators and once finished with, can be composted.

SURI Sustainable Electric Toothbrush

Single-use plastic toothbrushes are really bad for the environment. They cannot be recycled, we are encouraged to change them every few months and they aren’t going anywhere fast – around 500 years to breakdown into microplastics. One option is to change to a bamboo manual brush which can be composted but an even better option is to switch to the most sustainable electric toothbrush around, the SURI. We have been using ours for years now and absolutely love this brand. Not only are they sleek, available in a lovely range of colours and work incredibly well but they are also repairable, recyclable (you can send the heads back to the company) and the company is B Corp certified. They tick so many boxes making this a switch that will benefit your oral health and the planet. If you’re interested in purchasing one of these brushes I can offer you 10% off with my code EMMA10 at the checkout.

Plastic-Free Toothpaste

Another plastic fiend we find in the bathroom is, of course, toothpaste. These have long come under fire for only being available to purchase in a plastic single-use tube and it is reported that an estimated 1.5 billion tubes are thrown away globally every year!! Again, proof that our plastic waste problem truly is huge and out of control. Thankfully, there’s a brand new company that has come to market in order to tackle this issue – Mighty Mouthcare who have developed the very first refillable toothpaste. Their natural toothpaste (which does contain Fluoride) comes in compostable tubes that you place inside a reusable pump dispenser. These last around a month and once they are empty, you can send them off for industrial composting or do a me and see if they will breakdown in your home compost bin. Not only does the toothpaste taste great but it also works really well. The dispenser is ideal for children to use without making a big mess and their subscription service means you will never run out. This was our favourite swap of 2025 and I can offer you 20% off a starter pack ECOEMMA20 and following this link.
