My Honest Thoughts About A Ruggable Rug and Whether They are Worth The Cost

As a busy household, we have been through our fair share of hallway rugs. We’ve had ones badly fray, some stain, we’ve dealt with dog wee that won’t budge, and found all tricky to clean so when I saw an advert for the washable Ruggable rug, I thought to myself, let’s give it a try. That was probably around four years ago now and so it’s about time I share our honest thoughts.

About Ruggable

Founded by Jeneva Bell back in 2008, Ruggable set out to provide homes with a luxurious looking rug that would be easy to clean. Having grown up in a home where the rugs were expensive and beautiful, Jeneva faced many house rules in order to keep them at their best, which, as a kid, wasn’t at all fun. So, she came up with a solution for busy, messy, family-packed, fun-filled homes that want nice furnishings but also need convenience, and so the idea for Ruggable was born. Having taken off well in the US, the brand came across the pond to the UK in 2021 and has become a well-known and popular name in many households.

Sustainability and Giving Back

I wouldn’t say that Ruggable is a sustainable company per se, but they are doing their best and their bit to make a difference.

  • They use a mixture of virgin and recycled materials to make their products, with all being man-made fibres.
  • They do not chemically treat their rugs.
  • They use water-based dyes.
  • All of their rugs are made to order here in the UK (Birmingham).
  • By shipping their rugs folded, the company uses less packaging material compared to traditional rolled rug shipping methods.
  • Their rugs are designed to be washable in order to extend their lifespan and prevent unnecessary landfill waste.
  • The company give back to several organisations including the Chicago Furniture Bank, Best Friends Animal Society and A Sense of Home. You can read more over on their Philanthropy page here.

Ordering

I would say the hardest thing about ordering is deciding which design you should choose!! Honestly, have you seen their website?! I had to get a list of about 20 down to just 1 and that definitely took some time. Once I HAD decided (Sarrah Hazel Flatwoven Rug), I simply chose the size (72×215), and my order was in. Delivery to the UK is free (1-2 weeks) or if you want it within 4-7 days you can pay for their express service (see website for details). Looking back at my emails, my rug arrived within 10 days which I was very happy about.

First Impressions

I think my first thoughts were, it’s very, very thin. I am used to rugs that have some oomph to them and the Ruggable ones do not. They are flat. However, this was only for the hallway, to help protect the floor and to add some interest so I wasn’t overly bothered by this factor. The print was and still is stunning. A creamy blend with subtle shades popping through, making it look like a highly expensive piece when in fact it was only £125 (with a discount code).

Laying the Ruggable Rug

I purchased the pad system with my rug in order to help to keep it in place and prevent sliding. Now this is a great system, it really does work, however, I would not recommend attempting to lay your Ruggable on top of this alone; it’s a tricky job! The pad is essentially a bit like velcro. The material is designed to sucker itself onto the underside of your rug to keep it in place, but because the rug is so thin, if you lay one part awkwardly, you end up with creases, bumps and a wonky rug. Make sure you get a helping hand to get all of the material flat and even. Once you get it right, it looks fab!

Wear and Tear

As I said at the start, we’ve had this rug in our hallway for about 4 years now. We have pets, two kids, and we are all sporty and outdoorsy, oh, and we don’t have a utility/mud room, so everything and everybody comes straight from outside into our hallway. It can get messy, and it can get muddy, so our Ruggable Rug has certainly been put through its paces. However, you wouldn’t know. It has held its shape, it has no stains, it washes beautifully and it still looks great in our hallway.

Care

The Ruggable rug is designed for a busy family life, it is hard-wearing, the website states that our one is stain resistant and water resistant and that they are easy to maintain. I would say I agree with this. All I need to do most weeks is give it a quick vacuum – although you do need to choose a low setting on your machine and push in one direction so not to cause the material to pull and bunch up. Then once it is a little grubby it goes into the washing machine on a cool wash (I tend to use a 20/30). It has always washed so well and because it is thin, it dries quickly too.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Looks good
  • Hard wearing
  • Varied prices
  • Washable
  • Stain resistant
  • Designed for busy households
  • Large variety to choose from
  • Good range of sizes
  • Non slip pad works really well
  • UK made

  • Can be tricky to vacuum
  • Not made from natural materials

Overall Thoughts

We are really happy with our Ruggable rug and would definitely recommend it for spaces that get a lot of traffic where a traditional rug may get ruined over time. It has proven to be hard-wearing where other rugs we’ve previously chosen have not. It is easy to care for and it hasn’t lost its look or shape over 4 years. I’d say that it is ideal for any busy household. Is it worth the cost? Yes, I think so because these rugs can stand the test of time (and footsteps!)
