7 Houseplants That Naturally Purify The Air

a large range of houseplants on a cabinet and some on the floor of a room

We all love that feeling of stepping into a space that smells clean and fresh, but there is a far better way of achieving this than reaching for those toxic air fresheners. Did you know that some houseplants can actually help to purify the air you breathe? Yep, they quietly absorb pollutants and release fresh oxygen, all while making your home look gorgeous. Here are seven of my favourites that are easy to care for and work wonders for the air inside your home.

1. Peace Lily

Those elegant white flowers and deep-green leaves aren’t just pretty, they’re hardworking too. Peace lilies help filter out nasties like benzene and formaldehyde, and also help with your room’s humidity. They like a bright spot without direct sun and a sip of water when the soil feels dry on top.

2. Snake Plant

Also called mother-in-law’s tongue, this one is tough as nails. Forgetful with watering? No problem, it doesn’t need too much anyway. This plant is ideal for your bedroom or living room.

3. Spider Plant

If you’ve never owned a plant before, start here – you cannot go wrong. They are happy being neglected, they literally always bounce back and they easily grow little baby shoots which you can pot up for other rooms or for your friends! They will happily grow in almost any light and look great.

4. Boston Fern

Fluffy, feathery fronds give the Boston fern a lovely, soft look. They love a bit of humidity so these are ideal plants for the bathroom or kitchen.

5. Rubber Plant

Big, shiny leaves and serious air-cleaning skills; what’s not to love? Just give it bright, indirect light and a quick wipe of the leaves every now and then to keep them dust-free and healthy.

6. Areca Palm

If you’re after a hint of the tropics, the areca palm is perfect. It’s also great for adding moisture to the air so your home will always feel fresh and comfortable.

7. Aloe Vera

Not only does aloe soothe sunburn, it also pulls harmful chemicals from the air. It loves a sunny windowsill and only needs an occasional drink – ideal for busy households.

A Few Simple Tips

  • Don’t drown them – Most of these plants prefer their soil to dry a little before the next watering.
  • Dust those leaves – A quick wipe now and then keeps them breathing easily.
  • Match them to the light – Bright plants need bright spots, shady lovers will cope with less sun.

Bringing even a couple of these plants into your home can make such a noticeable difference to the air quality within your home. You’ll breathe easier, your rooms will look more vibrant, and you’ll have a few green companions quietly doing their bit for your wellbeing.
