5 Ways You Can Instantly Make Your Home Feel Cosier

One of the most important aspects of a home for me is that it feels cosy. Your house is where you come back to after a long day at work, it’s your sanctuary, a place to retreat to and where you can feel the most like you. Achieving that cozy homely feel doesn’t have to be tricky or cost a fortune, here are my 5 ways to get instant results.
Lighting
The right lighting in a home will make all the difference. Main lights are great for work or hobbies but come the evening, when you want to snuggle down in front of a good film, softer, mood lighting will easily transform a harsh room into a cosy space. Try placing a large floor lamp in one corner and adding a table lamp to the opposite corner. Choose lampshades that will provide good coverage of the light bulb to get that low, warm glow or maybe ones with interesting designs such as cut outs that give a dappled effect on the wall.

Candles
Candles have to be one of the most cost-effective ways of making your home instantly cosier. A few candles placed across a mantelpiece or on a shelf will not only look lovely but will also make you relax in no time. Look for candles that are made using natural ingredients such as beeswax or soywax, these are much better for your health than paraffin and heavily perfume based products.
Throws
A chunky throw is a must if you want a cosy space to unwind in and the great thing is, there are plenty of options to choose from these days. Fleece, knitted, soft cashmere which you can find in a variety of designs to meet your tastes and match your decor. In the evening you can snuggle under one for that cosy feel and during the day you can drape it over your sofa or bed to add some extra interest.

Cushions
Adding a range of cushions to your interior design will not give you space more of a wow factor but it will also improve comfort. When choosing soft furnishings like this, opt for a selection of different sizes and styles to make your space feel warm and inviting.
Books and Accessories
Dressing your space with items that mean something to you, that complement your current decor and really work together will help to complete your cosy feel home. Think books – opt for antique style to achieve that homely vibe, – photo frames, wooden ornaments, plants, prints and vases/pots.

Budget Tips
As I said at the start, I don’t believe that you need to spend a fortune to make your house a home and the best way to stick to a budget is to:
- Use what you already own – move items around your home to find the most suitable room.
- Shope secondhand – charity shops are treasure troves for home decor and you can always find something unique, definitely utilise these well. Also check Vinted, car boot sales, Facebook Marketplace and eBay.
- Swap with friends – why not set up a swap event where you all bring items you longer want/need and see if you can find the perfect bits for your cosy room.
- Upcycle – transforming things you already own is another fantastic way of saving money and also creating something no one else has. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, perhaps make some new cusion covers or make a throw. Maybe add a lick of paint to an old photoframe or add some stain to a wooden lamp.
Making your home feel a little more cosy can be so much fun, so why not give some of these ideas a try?
